SUPPORTING WEAVERS IN BAMIYAN

Turquoise Mountain is currently working with thousands of weavers across Afghanistan, about 250 of whom are in the Bamiyan Valley. We design, produce and finish contemporary and traditional carpets, whose value chain is entirely in Afghanistan. For the past few years, we have partnered with Label STEP, a Swiss non-profit organisation that ensures a comprehensive set of fair-trade standards, including good working and living conditions, fair wages, the prohibition of child labour, and environmentally friendly production.

Through our collaboration with Label STEP we offer access to health services, host group meetings to discuss weavers’ issues and international labour standards, ensure children are able to attend school, and help weavers to contribute to the community through their work. Our ultimate goal is to create equitable livelihoods for weavers and help Afghanistan regain a significant share of the global carpet industry.
